What to Expect at Your First Personal Training Session

By Adam — ISSA Certified Personal Trainer, Moncton, NB 5 min read

First-time personal training clients often feel anxious before that first session. "Will I be fit enough? Will it be embarrassing? What actually happens?" Here's exactly what you can expect — from booking to walking out the door.

Before the Session: Booking

At Atom Fitness in Moncton, you book your free consultation online. You pick a time that works for you (availability is 7 days a week), and you'll receive a confirmation by email. That's it — no calls, no complicated intake forms beforehand.

When You Arrive

I'll meet you at the gym and do a quick introduction. Don't worry about your current fitness level — I've coached complete beginners who haven't exercised in years, and I've coached competitive athletes. The consultation is designed to meet you exactly where you are.

The Goal-Setting Conversation (First 20–30 Minutes)

We start with a conversation, not a workout. I want to understand:

  • What brought you here? What's the specific goal?
  • Training history — have you trained before, or is this new?
  • Injury history and any movement limitations
  • Schedule — how many days per week are realistic for you?
  • Lifestyle — sleep, stress, nutrition basics

This isn't a sales pitch. I'm building a picture of who you are as an athlete and where we start. The more honest you are, the better your program will be.

The Fitness Assessment

A basic movement assessment follows — nothing intimidating. I check fundamental movement patterns: squat, hinge, push, pull. This tells me where the imbalances are, what we need to reinforce, and what to avoid or modify.

The Workout (Approximately 1 Hour)

You'll do a real, guided workout — your first one. It's adjusted to your current fitness level so it's challenging but never unsafe or humiliating. You'll leave feeling like you actually trained, not like you were babied. I'll coach your form on every exercise, explain why each movement matters, and give you real-time feedback.

The Debrief

After the workout, we review how it went and I'll outline what a training plan would look like for you — the frequency, the approach, the progression. If you want to continue, we discuss options. If you need to think about it, there's zero pressure.

What to Bring

  • Comfortable workout clothing
  • Clean indoor gym shoes
  • A water bottle
  • Honesty about your goals and current fitness level

You don't need to be fit to start. You just need to show up.
